The Gem 1962

I was inspired by the imagery depicted in a 1962 Taylor University Yearbook titled The Last Year of Gem. In my work, I thought conceptually of the academic buildings and residence halls that were pictured throughout this yearbook artifact and how the architecture has changed over that course of time leading to present day and the creation of this piece. In the artifact, I saw buildings being built new, buildings being destroyed to rubble, buildings being moved to new locations, and buildings being set to fire. While creating this piece, I thought about how even in the adversity of building confinements, Taylor’s mission of “Light and Faith” integration did not waiver due to the favor of God.
