Sparking a Vibrant Future

Art 345 Relief and Serigraphy partnered with the Archives for this collaborative project. Students in Professor Laura Stevenson’s class did primary source research with Professor Ashley Chu in the Archives, where they read articles and checked out artifacts from Taylor’s history.

They then used this research as an inspiration and a springboard to think forwardly and create relief linocut prints in response to the archival documents and contemplating “Sparking a vibrant future”, which is a part of Taylor’s strategic plan.

Relief printmaking is a process of creating an image by cutting away parts of a block so that all that is left is the design to be printed. The artists worked reductively, which meant that they started with removing what they wanted to be the white of the paper, then printed their first color. Next they removed from the same block the areas they wanted that first color to appear in the print. This process continued for several layers of colors.
