Abstract
This paper introduces the beginnings of ACMS and the motivation for its biennial conferences. It provides a broad historical overview of calculus and geometry. It also sketches issues in 5 areas - truth, axiomatics, the proliferation of new developments, number, infinity - in which ACMS has a stake. While Dr. Brabenec's thinking on these issues has grown considerably since this article was written, it is posted as presented in 1977 because of its historical importance.
