Abstract

Christians believe that human beings are designed to live in community; hence building community is part of God's calling for computer science programs. Building community allows colleges to equip students with the interpersonal skills that they need for a productive career and to attract and retain students in computer science programs, particularly female, ethnically diverse, and economically disadvantaged students.

This paper outlines a philosophy of community building and gives examples of strategies and activities employed to build community at Westmont College. It presents data to show a positive effect on students from these efforts.
