Abstract
Churches are called to be a place of belonging and welcoming to all people who walk through their doors. However, it is common that individuals and families impacted by disability are left feeling marginalized and unwelcome in the church. This paper presents a philosophy for RISE Kids, a ministry at Markle Church of Christ in Markle, Indiana that exists to provide advocacy and support for these families to promote a true sense of belonging. The goal of this paper is to provide local churches with a ministry framework to intentionally minister to individuals and families with disabilities. This paper describes the theological, anthropological, and sociological premises that impact how a disability ministry functions. Additionally, it offers a detailed description of what an individual should like after being involved in the ministry. This paper provides both a theoretical basis and a practical basis for a disability ministry seeking to disciple children and their families. Through intentional programs and practices, individuals and families impacted by disability are welcomed into a church family where they belong. As these children and families are being discipled, they are learning more about what it looks like to love God and love others.
